British Orthodox rabbi and author (1939–2022)
Abraham Levy was a prominent British Orthodox rabbi, theologian, and author who made significant contributions to the field of Judaism. Born in 1939, he dedicated his life to serving the Jewish community, particularly the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community in Britain, which he led as spiritual head from 1962 to 2012. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the community's spiritual and educational landscape.
Levy's commitment to inter-faith cooperation and education was recognized through various endeavors, including his role as a founding member of the Naima Jewish Preparatory School. His efforts in promoting understanding and cooperation among different faiths were formally acknowledged in 2004, when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) as part of the New Year Honours. Levy passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to his community and his faith, as well as a body of written work that continues to inspire and educate.
