Daniel Zion

Bulgarian rabbi (1883 - 1979)

Daniel Zion was a prominent Bulgarian rabbi, born in 1883, who played a significant role in the country's Jewish community. Initially, he served as a shochet and cantor in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he became an influential figure. As an Orthodox rabbi and Kabbalist, Zion's presence was notable in a community that was largely assimilated, with no ultra-Orthodox communities present during World War II.

Zion's life took a significant turn in 1950 when he emigrated to Israel. However, his newfound beliefs led to controversy, as he came to regard Jesus of Nazareth as the Jewish Messiah. This shift in his convictions resulted in his removal from his position on the local rabbinical court. Despite this, Zion remained a notable figure in the Jewish community until his passing in 1979, at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy as a rabbi, Kabbalist, and political activist.
