His entry into politics began with his election as the Alaska State Representative for District 26, a position he held from 1997 to 2007. Berkowitz has been the Democratic nominee for several significant positions, including lieutenant governor in 2006, Alaska's at-large congressional district in 2008, and governor in 2010.
