Joel Oppenheimer
American poet
Joel Oppenheimer was a prominent American poet, whose work was influenced by his associations with the Black Mountain poets and the New York School. His involvement in the literary scene extended beyond his own writing, as he played a key role in the development of the St. Marks Poetry Project, serving as its first director from 1966 to 1968. This position allowed him to foster a community of poets and promote the art form.
In addition to his poetry, Oppenheimer was also recognized for his work as a columnist, writing for the Village Voice from 1969 to 1984. His columns in the publication helped to establish him as a notable figure in the literary world, and he became perhaps equally well-known for his non-poetic writing as for his poetry. Through his various pursuits, Oppenheimer made a lasting impact on the American literary landscape, leaving a legacy as a poet, director, and columnist.
