John Kastner was a Canadian filmmaker renowned for his documentary work, particularly in the realm of the Canadian criminal justice system. Born in 1946, Kastner established himself as a prominent figure in the film industry, earning four Emmy Awards for his contributions. His documentaries often delved into complex social issues, providing insightful explorations of the human experience.
Kastner's filmography includes a range of notable works, such as Out of Mind, Out of Sight, which won best Canadian feature documentary at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2014. Other notable films include NCR: Not Criminally Responsible, Life with Murder, The Lifer and the Lady, and Parole Dance. He also ventured into drama with the 1986 made-for-television film Turning to Stone, set in the Prison for Women in Kingston, Ontario.
