Yitzchok Friedman

Ukrainian rabbi (1850–1917)

Yitzchok Friedman was a prominent Ukrainian rabbi who lived from 1850 to 1917. As the grandson of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin, the founder of the Ruzhin Hasidic dynasty, Friedman came from a distinguished lineage of Jewish leaders. In 1887, he established a Hasidic court in Boiany, Bukovina, which would eventually become the Boyaner Hasidic dynasty. Friedman served as the first Rebbe of this dynasty, guiding his followers and expanding the community's reach.

Under Friedman's leadership, the Boyaner Hasidic dynasty flourished, with communities established in various locations across Eastern Europe, as well as in Tiberias and Jerusalem. As a member of the Ruzhin dynasty, Friedman was also associated with the Volhynia kolel, an institution that operated under the patronage of his illustrious ancestor. During World War I, Friedman relocated to Vienna, where he passed away in 1917. His legacy continued through his sons, who went on to establish their own Hasidic courts in cities such as Chernivtsi, Leipzig, Lviv, and New York, ensuring the continuation of the Boyaner dynasty.
